Late Summer: Coming Home to Center
There is a quiet moment each year that often goes unnoticed.
The calendar still says summer. The days are warm, tomatoes ripen on the vine, and the evenings hum with crickets and fireflies. Yet beneath the surface, something begins to change. The light shifts almost imperceptibly. Mornings arrive with a hint of coolness. Smells ripen. Nature begins preparing for what comes next.
In Chinese Medicine, this is Late Summer—a brief fifth season that belongs to the Earth Element.
Unlike the excitement of spring or the exuberance of summer, the Earth Element invites us inward. It is the season of harvest, nourishment, and integration. After months of growth and activity, the Earth Element invites us to ask:
What truly nourishes me?
The Earth Element governs our ability to digest and process—not only food, but experiences, relationships, thoughts, and the pace of life itself. When Earth is balanced, we feel grounded, present, compassionate, and at home in ourselves. We trust that there is enough. We move steadily rather than hurriedly.
When Earth becomes depleted, we often notice the opposite. We overthink. We worry. We feel scattered or exhausted despite sleeping. We crave constant stimulation while feeling strangely undernourished.
Perhaps this is why Late Summer feels so comforting.
Nature reminds us that abundance doesn't always look like doing more. Sometimes abundance is a quiet dinner made from the garden, bare feet on warm grass, laughter shared with friends, or sitting on the porch as the sun sets a little earlier than it did last week.
This season encourages us to simplify.
To eat foods that come from the earth. To savor meals without rushing. To rest without guilt. To notice what truly fills us—and what quietly drains us.
In the clinic, Late Summer is also a wonderful time to strengthen the body before autumn arrives. One of the ways we do this is through San Fu treatments, a traditional seasonal therapy offered only during the hottest weeks of the year. By working with summer's abundant Yang energy, these treatments help support immunity, respiratory health, vitality, and resilience in the colder months ahead. They are now available at Emerging Energy through August 31.
This week, rather than asking yourself what still needs to be accomplished, try asking:
What is nourishing me?
What am I ready to digest and integrate?
Where can I soften my pace?
What beauty have I been too busy to notice?
Late Summer teaches us that strength doesn't always come from striving.
Sometimes it grows quietly, like fruit ripening in the warmth of the sun, nourished by the earth beneath it.
May this season bring you back to your center.
